What was it like?
Do you want to get an idea of what life was like when our great great grandparents were alive? Autobiographies, diaries and books written by people who lived in those times can offer insights. When I read Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, I imagine that’s how William and Annie Brooks lived in Illinois in the 1870’s.
Our ancestors were industrious people. They lived off the land and made use of everything they possessed. They had few possessions and valued highly what they owned. The Ox Cart Man written by Donald Hall and illustrated by Barbara Clooney, won a Caldecott Medal in 1980. This book portrays a farming family’s life in New England in the early 19th century. It’s one of my favorite picture books. Click here to see a reading of the book.
